A Message from Paul Wright on New Years' Eve 2024
At the end of the year, we have accomplished a lot. We ended the censorship of Prison Legal News and Criminal Legal News by the North Carolina prison system. We won major public records lawsuits against Centurion Health in Vermont, New Mexico, and the Drug Enforcement Agency. After decades of advocacy, the Federal Communications Commission is capping the cost of prison and jail phone calls with new rates going into effect on January 1, 2025, which will save prisoners and their families hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Human Rights Defense Center continues fighting for the rights of prisoners, their families, and those negatively impacted by the criminal justice system. Yesterday, December 30, we filed a suit against the Pacific County Jail in Washington state, which banned all books and magazines. It is our last lawsuit of the year, but we are ready to bring more in 2025.
We need your help to keep doing this. We can and do keep fighting nationally, around the country. But to do so effectively, we need your help and support. We have a lean operation to ensure your donation goes as far as possible. Unlike other organizations, criminal justice is our only concern and all we do. We do not have any other agenda or priorities. We are also nonpartisan. It does not matter who is in office or who wins or loses elections. We have advocated for prisoner rights for over 34 years and will keep doing so.
All donations, large and small, make a difference. Please consider becoming a monthly donor. Let your friends and networks know about us and encourage them to support HRDC as well.
Thank you for your help and support, and best wishes for the new year!
In Solidarity,
Paul Wright
