$620,000 Settlement for Florida Jail Beating Death
While imprisoned in Florida's Palm Beach County Jail, a 35 year old Haitian laborer was beaten by guards. He sustained in June 1985, a broken neck and was left in his cell with no medical treatment. When he was finally taken to the jail's hospital, nurses accused him of faking his injuries and doctors failed to diagnose the neck injury after an x-ray. After he was returned to his cell, his condition worsened and he died in the hospital from his injuries.
The matter was settled by the parties paying as follows: Prison Health Services $150,000; Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office $225,000; Human Hospital $50,000; Dr. Canedo $50,000; Dr. Grugan $70,000; Dr. Kiner $75,000. The prisoner's seven brothers and sisters are also to receive $400 per month for the rest of their life. The matter was settled in September 1985. See: Abraham v. Palm Beach County Sheriff's Dept., Fla. 15th Judicial Circuit, Case No. 85-7438. 1985 WL 681402 (Fla. Cir. Ct.).
