$200 Awarded To NY Prisoner in Slip and Fall Suit

Curtis Flowers, a prisoner at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility (SSCF),
filed a pro se law suit against SSCF, for injuries he received as a result
of slipping on the stairs at SSCF.

On December 4,1998, Flowers slipped and fell on a staircase at SSCF,
receiving soft tissue injuries to his knee and elbow. Flowers alleged that
the prisoner tier porters in charge of sweeping and mopping the staircases
were instructed by prison guards not to clean the stairs until all
activities were over. That instruction or practice by the prison guards
left debris and liquids on the stairs from food trays and other sources,
which was dangerous.

On February 22, 2002, the New York, Court of Claims, held that the state
was responsible, and that they knew of the existence of the potentially
dangerous condition of the staircases. The court awarded Flowers $200 in
damages for past pain and suffering. See: Flowers v. State of New York,
Claim No. 101480 (Court of Claims, White Plains).
