$40,000 Jury Award for Texas Jail Beating that Left Soccer Star Quadriplegic

While held in Texas' Lubbock County Jail, former West African soccer star
Mohamet Sheriff Njie was assaulted by guards on October 7, 1996, at 3:00
a.m., according to his lawsuit. After the beating, Njie was left naked in a
padded cell for 34 hours. When he lapsed into unconsciousness, he was taken
to University Medical Center, where he was treated for hypothermia and
double pneumonia. Five days later, it was discovered he had a fractured
neck. He was rendered a quadriplegic because of the beating.

Guard contended Njie had a manic bipolar disorder, which caused guards to
use force on him. Moreover, he was launching himself into his cell walls.
The Court ordered a take-nothing judgment and for Njie to pay all court
costs. On March 2, 1998, a jury found Sgt. Cindy Stinson and Deputy Gaylon
Martin guilty of deliberate indifference, ordering each to pay Njie $20,000
or $40,000 total. See: Njie v. Lubbock County, USDC, ND TX, Case No: unknown.
