Ferry Rams Dock, State of Washington Pays $1,294
On June 8th, 1997, Colleen E. Castanada was riding the Department of Corrections operated Callam Ferry when it rammed into the side of a dock. Castanada, who was on her way to visit a prisoner at McNeil Island Corrections Center in Steilacoom, Washington, flew from her seat to the right "and was wedged between her seat and a pillar" that helped support the upper deck. Castanada's right arm had been caught and twisted around this particular support beam. After a guard responded with immediate attention Castanada signed a paper stating that she did not want to see a McNeil Island Physician. Because of the incident Castanada suffered back pains that required her to see a physician and chiropractor. In 1998 Castanada filed a tort claim alleging her injuries were caused by the Washington DOC's negligence. On April 16th, 1998, the State of Washington paid Castanada $1,294.35 to settle the claim. See: Castanada v. State of Washington, Claim No. 31032491-01.
