Washington Guard Settles Sex Discrimination Suit for $734,900

Lenna Bradley, a Washington state Department of Corrections (DOC) guard, sued the state in state court after the DOC did nothing to remedy the sexual harassment she was subjected to by other guards. After she filed suit she was harassed by guards until she quit her job. Bradley appealed the trial court's grant of summary judgment to the state, and just before oral argument in 1999, the state paid Bradley $734,900 to dismiss the suit: $124,500 for emotional distress, $110,000 for retraining and $500,000 for lost benefits. See: Bradley v. State of Washington, Pierce County Superior Court, Case No. 92-2-12321-3 (1999).
