$2,000 Settlement in Seattle Jail Medication Claim

Washington State’s King County paid $1,975 to settle the claim of Lenard Lindsey for events that occurred between March 20, 2000 and May 18, 2000. While riding in a jail vehicle that was forced to make a sudden stop on March 20, Lindsey suffered whiplash due to being shackled and unable to protect himself. He was prescribed painkillers and physical therapy when released from jail.

On May 2, his prescription of Remeron was discontinued to start Zoloft and Trazodine. Jail personnel, however, continued the Remeron and administered Trazodine, which causes vomiting. The interaction of the two drugs caused a more severe reaction, causing extreme stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Lindsey suffered an ulcerated small tear in his intestine and loss of blood, which resulted in transport to a hospital for 3 liters of blood.

Represented by the Seattle law office of Michael C. Kahrs, Lindsey settled the claim for $1,000 in damages and $975 in costs. The documents related to this claim are available on PLN’s website. See: In re Lindsey, King County Claim No. 29607.
