$2,500 Settlement for Jail’s Failure to Treat Broken Hand
Washington State’s King County Jail has paid Edward D. Bland $2,500 to settle a claim that the Jail failed to treat his broken right hand. Upon booking on March 9, 2004, a jail nurse examined Bland’s hand, which was as large as a grapefruit from swelling, and declared he was all right and the swelling would go down.
The swelling did not go down and an x-ray was not taken until March 19, which revealed the hand was broken, resulting in Bland being taken from the Jail to a hospital. In addition to enduring pain over that period, the hand did not heal properly due to the failure to treat the injury in a timely manner.
Acting pro se, Bland settled the matter on June 30, 2005. The documents related to this claim are available on PLN’s website. See: In re Bland, King County Claim No. 35252.
