Washington DOC Pays Prisoner $1,000 for Injury

On June 19, 2005, Washington state prisoner, Daniel Erickson, filed a claim against the DOC seeking $2,000 in damages for injuries he suffered while performing his assigned job. He accused DOC staff of negligence in failing to properly secure a manhole cover, which was displaced when he stepped on it, causing him to fall into the hole and injure his leg. In support of his position, he noted that immediately following his injury the manhole cover in question was replaced and tack-welded in place to prevent future mishaps. On July 21, 2007, Erickson accepted a $1,000 payment to dismiss his claim.
