Nurse Settles Washington DOC Wrongful Termination Suit
In the Superior Court of Snohomish County, State of Washington, Plaintiff Annette Belden settled for $100,000 in May 2004 a wrongful termination suit against the Washington Department of Corrections. Belden, an employee at the Washington State Reformatory in Monroe, Wash., worked as registered nurse from February 1983 to October 1996, whereupon her employment was terminated for having a disability. Belden lodged repeated notices from both herself and her doctors with the Department of Corrections asserting that she was able to perform all the necessary essential functions of her job, claims which went unacknowledged. Plaintiff claimed the defendants relied on the opinions of non-medical personnel in medical issues over those of her doctors in arriving at their decision, and that they ignored repeated requests for records from Belden’s doctors.
