$5,000 Settlement for Housing Discrimination Based on Disability
On January 28, 2010, Vermont Human Rights Commission (VHRC) found reasonable grounds that Dismas of Vermont, Inc., illegally discriminated against Finbar Patrick McGarry in housing based on his disability.
McGarry had filed a housing complaint with VHRC and with U.S. Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Vermont Fair Housing and Public Accommodation Act, 9 V.S.A §§ 4503 et Set., prohibiting discrimination based on physical or mental condition.
Under the Post-Determination Conciliation Agreement, Dismas settled by paying McGarry $3,750 and Dark Star Law Group, LLC $,1250, agreed to not retaliate against McGarry or anyone else who cooperated with the investigation, performed a full day training on fair housing laws and procedures, and reviewed and revised policies and procedures.
