$12,500 Settlement for CCA Guard’s Failure to Protect Tennessee Prisoner Stabbed 13 Times
Correction Corporation of America (CCA) paid $12,500 to settle a lawsuit brought by Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility prisoner Roberto J. Gatewood.
Gatewood alleged that guard Josh Evans stood by and failed to intervene when prisoner Mustafa Mohammad used a knife to stab him approximately thirteen times. The March 3, 2002, attack made CCA liable, the complaint alleged, because CCA knew or should have known Mohammad was a violent prisoner who had made threats towards Gatewood, and for its failure to train its employees to intervene in such incidents.
The September 2005 confidential settlement was obtained by PLN via public records request. Gatewood was represented by Dickson attorney Jerred A. Creasy.
