$12,630.50 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Who Suffered Leg Amputation
Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) paid $12,630.50 to settle a lawsuit by former prisoner Samuel L. Key for the failure to provide medical treatment that resulted in amputation of his left leg.
Key suffered circulation problems in both legs for several years prior to being provided an arteriogram on February 2, 2001, while held at the Hardeman County Correctional Facility. Over the next month, CCA employees failed to follow-up on the test results and specialist physician’s scheduling of surgery. Key did not receive treatment until after his July 3, 2011, release was granted after he was granted habeas corpus relief. The failure to treat worsened his condition and resulted in amputation of Key’s left leg.
The confidential settlement was obtained by PLN via public records request. Key received $12,000 and CCA paid $630.50 to the Circuit Court. Key was represented by Nashville attorney Mary Leech.
