CCA Paid $3,000 Settlement to Prisoner Assaulted with Issued Lock
Correction Corporation of America (CCA) paid $3,000 to settle the lawsuit of Silverdale Correctional Facility prisoner Jeffrey L. Pines who alleged CCA was negligent in issuing a lock that was subsequently used to assault him on the head and eye.
Pines was assaulted with a CCA issued lock by prisoner Laval Freeman as he was asleep on his bottom bunk. The complaint alleged the December 1, 1999, assault was caused by CCA’s failing to protect Pines from potentially violent prisoners, issuing locks that could be used as weapons, and failing to take steps to assure the locks could not be used as weapons.
The March 2002 confidential settlement was obtained by PLN via public records request. Pines was represented by Chattanooga attorney Charles G. Wright, Jr.
