$1,500 Settlement for Prisoner’s Nude Perp Walk by CCA Employees
$1,500 Settlement for Prisoner’s Nude Perp Walk by CCA Employees
Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) paid $1,500 to settle a lawsuit alleging guards at Hardeman County Correctional Institution stripped a prisoner and walked him through the prison.
While working in the prison’s parking lot, prisoner Thomas Pruitt was approached by Security Chief Perez and guards Shirley McKinney and Brandon Moore. They ordered Pruitt to strip on the spot. Once naked, he was handcuffed behind the back as the female guards came into the prison during shift change.
Pruitt was then taken through the prison naked to the medical department, where two nurses cleared him for segregation. He was then escorted naked to segregation where a guard gave him boxer shorts.
The claim alleged Pruitt’s civil rights to privacy were violated by female guards being able to view his naked body as he was stripped and walked through the prison. The January 2004 confidential settlement agreement was obtained by PLN via public records request. Pruitt proceeded pro se.
