$10,000 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Injured in Kitchen
$10,000 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Injured in Kitchen
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America paid $10,000 to settle a negligence claim alleging it failed to train a prisoner on how to use a skillet in the kitchen of the Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility.
Prisoner Roscoe Williams was assigned a job utilizing a tilt-skillet to prepare vegetables in the prison’s kitchen. The complaint alleged that on June 21, 2009, the skillet was in disrepair and negligently propped up with a food tray. When he closed the lid, it spilled boiling water onto his boots and caused severe burns.
Williams agreed to the settlement on March 12, 2012. See: Williams v. Corrections Corporation of America, U.S.D.C. (M. D. Tenn.), Case No. 3:10-cv-00587.
