$30,000 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Assault Involving Guard Conspiracy
$30,000 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Assault Involving Guard Conspiracy
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America paid $30,000 to settle a lawsuit that alleged a guard at Silverdale Correctional Facility conspired with a prisoner to assault another prisoner.
The complaint of Willie McLeod alleged that on March 26, 2010, guard Eric Dunnigan shut McLeod’s cell door, preventing him from running away from federal prisoner Marvin Goodwin. As Dunnigan stood by and watched, Goodwin chased McLeod around the cell while stabbing and beating him.
McLeod alleged that a guard outside the cell deliberately shut the cell door when it opened, resulting in a prolonged beating and a deep knife wound. The door again opened, and a guard saved McLeod’s life by pepper spraying Goodwin.
McLeod agreed to the settlement in June 2012. He proceeded pro se. See: McLeod v. Corrections Corporation of America, U.S.D.C. (E.D. Tenn.), Case No. 1:10-cv-00183.
