$7,000 Settlement in CCA Failure to Protect Lawsuit
$7,000 Settlement in CCA Failure to Protect Lawsuit
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America paid $7,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging officials at Whiteville Correctional Facility (WCF) failed to protect a prisoner.
The suit alleged that prisoner Lorenzo Johnson, a Wisconsin prisoner held at West Tennessee Detention Facility, was attacked on his second day at the prison by prisoner Obrey Haynes and his gang associates. Both were sent to segregation and transferred to WCF.
They remained in segregation, and Johnson was told this was to keep him separated from Haynes and his associates. Yet, on April 2, 2002, Haynes was placed in the same recreation area as Johnson.
Haynes attacked Johnson, striking him numerous times in the head, neck and face. He was also body slammed to the ground, causing a severe back injury.
Johnson agreed to the settlement on June 27, 2012. He proceeded pro se. See: Johnson v. Corrections Corporation of America, Circuit Court of Hardeman County (Tenn.), Case No. 09605.
