$42,500 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Assaulted with Padlock
$42,500 Settlement for CCA Prisoner Assaulted with Padlock
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) paid $42,500 to settle a lawsuit alleging CCA was liable for the assault of a prisoner, Scott J. Rattan, with a padlock.
The August 3, 2002 assault was committed by Connell Sheppard, using a CCA “rented” padlock, at the Silverdale Workhouse. Rattan sustained fractures to his face and an injury to his left eye.
The complaint alleged CCA was liable for failing to classify violent and non-violent offenders, renting padlocks to prisoners, knowing they were used as weapons, and failing to provide sufficient guards to prevent violence.
Rattan agreed to the settlement on January 8, 2008. He was represented by attorney Michael S. Prichard. See: Rattan v. Corrections Corporation of America, Circuit Court of Hamilton County (Tenn.), Case No. 03C1369.
