$50,000 Settlement in Murder of CCA Prisoner
$50,000 Settlement in Murder of CCA Prisoner
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America paid $50,000 to settle a lawsuit involving the murder of a prisoner at the Hardeman Correctional Facility in Tennessee.
Prisoner Ricky E. Gardner was manually strangled to death on April 19, 2010 by his cellmate, a prisoner known to be mentally unstable and often violent. Prison officials did not inform Gardner’s family of his death until two days later.
Gardner’s estate agreed to the settlement on September 18, 2012. The estate was represented by attorney Lowell Glanton. See: Gardner v. Easterling, U.S.D.C. (W. D. Tenn.), Case No. 1:11-cv-01062.
