$75,000 Settlement in CCA Prisoner’s Suicide
$75,000 Settlement in CCA Prisoner’s Suicide
by David M. Reutter
Corrections Corporation of America paid $75,000 to settle a lawsuit seeking redress for its failure to provide care to prevent a prisoner’s suicide.
Whiteville Correctional Facility prisoner, Lawrence Ware, Jr., was known to suffer from mental problems. On March 5, 2006, Ware had a visitor come to WCF. Prior to the visit, the visitor was arrested, due to her being caught with marijuana on her person.
Prison officials placed Ware in segregation for his visitor’s criminal act. Prior to, and at the time of his segregation, Ware told guards that he would commit suicide if put in confinement. Staff took no action and Ware committed suicide that day.
His estate agreed to the settlement on February 11, 2009. Ware’s estate was represented by attorney Jeffrey S. Rosenblum. See: Ware v. Corrections Corporation of America, U.S.D.C. (W.D. Tenn.), Case No. 2:07-cv-02154.
