$8.5 Million Settlement for Wrongful Conviction of Louisville Man
One of the two victims of a September 28, 1993 gas station robbery and murder was finally able to say, “I feel like Justice has been served.” Edwin Arnell Chandler was 21 years old when he was charged with killing 25-year-old counter clerk Brenda Whitfield. After nearly a decade in prison, technology was finally able to corroborate his claims of innocence. To get a conviction in the high-profile murder, police ignored physical evidence, suppressed witness statements, and coerced Chandler into a confession. As a result, Chandler lost nine years of his life; the city lost $8,500,000.
Electronic fingerprint evidence, not yet available at the time of Chandler’s conviction, liked the crime to another man, Percy Phillips, who was located in prison serving time for assault.
