$1 Million Paid by Wexford in Florida Prisoner’s death
Wexford Health Services paid $1 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from the 2004 death of Florida prisoner, Sergio Morejon, age 36. Just nine months shy of his release, Morejon got into a brawl with prisoners Monte Jordan and Willie Robinson.
Wexford’s staff did not realize the extent of Morejon’s injuries. At one point, when he asked for water, guards and nurses tried to get him to his feet and put him in a shower. Guards eventually moved him to the infirmary, but it was not until an hour later that paramedics were called.
“In this case, thank God the department of corrections videotaped the infirmary scenes,” said attorney Gregg Schwartz. The video showed there was no care or improper care that caused Morejon’s death. He subsequently died that afternoon, Feb. 24, 2004, of head trauma and bleeding in the brain. The suit was settled in April 2007.
