$270,000 Settlement in False Arrest and Excessive Force by Los Angeles Deputies
Los Angeles County paid $270,000 to settle a lawsuit that alleged sheriff’s deputies unlawfully arrested and used excessive force on Ricky Allen on September 25, 2013.
As deputies attempted to contact Allen as he came out of a residence, he fled from them. He ran to a cinder block wall, climbed it, and retrieved a black object. Deputies told him to drop the alleged gun, and when he failed to do so, deputies opened fire.
Allen went over the wall and fled into a “dry wash”. He turned to deputies and was allegedly positioned the “black object” toward deputies, who again fired shots after Allen ignored “instructions to drop the gun”.
Allen was taken to a hospital for treatment. Prior to the January 7, 2015, settlement recommendation, the county spent $15,130 on attorney fees and $1,603 in costs. Allen was represented by attorney Brian Dun. See: Allen v. county of Los Angeles, USDC, District California, Case No CV-13-079916.
