$35,051 Settles Prisoner Van Crash

by Matt Clarke

Through December 2016, Cochise County, Arizona had paid over $42,000 to resolve an accident caused by a Cochise County prisoner transport van that struck a Kia Sorento after exiting the Pima County Jail.

Guard Armando Cruz was driving the 2006 Chevrolet van transporting a female prisoner on June 20, 2014, when he exited the jail by making a left turn onto Nest Silverlake Road, striking a Kia on the driver's side. This caused the Kia to spin, roll over onto its right side, and slide several feet on the center median. The Kia driver, Melissa Vasquez and her daughter, Rosella Enriquez were treated at a hospital. Tucson police issued Cruz a citation.

Vasquez filed a lawsuit in state court. It was settled for $35,051. Prior to settlement, the county paid $5,373.08 to her husband, Jose, who is a part owner in the car, and $2,000 to Enriquez. Vasquez was represented by attorney Mike Moldoveanu.
