Georgia Guard Fired, Charged With Setting Up Assault that Left Prisoner Dead

A Georgia Department of Corrections (DOC) guard was fired and arrested on May 25, 2024, for allegedly letting three August State Medical Prison (ASMP) prisoners into the cell of a fourth to carry out an assault, during which the intended victim killed one of his attackers.

Prisoners Brendon Moore, 37, and Andy Ulysse, 32, were charged with felony murder in the slaying of fellow prisoner Roderick Hayes, 29. He was killed, apparently in self-defense, by prisoner Robert Robish, 27, when the three entered his cell with a “machete-like weapon”—allegedly after being granted access by guard Lloyd Hopkins, 51.

Hopkins, the lone guard on duty in the area at the time, reportedly sent the trio to retrieve a contraband cellphone. A three-year DOC veteran, he was charged with being a party to Hayes’ murder and assault, as well as violating his oath of office. Hayes’ body was turned over to the state Bureau of Investigation for medical examination, while DOC’s Office of Professional Standards also opened an inquiry into his death. The prisoner was serving a 10-year term for child cruelty handed down in July 2018, though he had been incarcerated since September 2014 on an earlier burglary conviction.

Moore’s convictions include rape, fleeing/eluding police, carjacking, armed robbery, terroristic acts and threats, kidnapping and aggravated sodomy, while Ulysse was imprisoned for kidnapping, armed robbery, false imprisonment and theft. Robish was serving a 10-year term for a 2015 robbery conviction; it was unclear whether he was charged in Hayes’ death. DOC said that Hopkins was terminated for failure to follow prison policy. He was booked into the Columbia County jail and apparently released, according to records maintained by Sheriff Clay N. White. It was unclear what any of the prisoners was being treated for at ASMP.
