Mississippi Prison Warden Suspended After Security Chief Caught Smuggling

Warden Terrance Watt was placed on administrative leave by the Mississippi Department of Corrections after his Chief of Security at Winston-Choctaw Regional Correctional Facility was picked up on smuggling charges on July 11, 2024.

Nikita Carter, 35, was arrested and charged with 12 counts of furnishing contraband to a prisoner, whom Winston County Sheriff Mike Perkins identified as James Robinson. The prisoner was moved to another lockup and will face additional charges, Perkins said. He also said that Carter admitted smuggling a cellphone, marijuana and food from outside the jail to Robinson. She was taken into custody at the county jail on a $60,000 bond.

Perkins added that problems at the prison were not unknown to Watt. “It was brought to his attention a long time ago about things going on that I thought weren’t right,” the Sheriff said, “and they haven’t been corrected.”
