Louisiana Prisoner Charged With Running Sports Gambling Operation

On December 18, 2024, Louisiana State Police (LSP) arrested Elayn Hunt Correctional Center prisoner Broderick Scott, 48, on charges that he operated a large-scale sports gambling operation from his cell. LSP said that a year-long investigation had identified over 30,000 transactions on Cash App related to the scheme, which dated to May 2023.

Scott was temporarily transferred to Iberville Parish Jail for booking on charges of gambling and unlawful establishment of accounts on Internet-based social networking websites by inmates. He is serving a 23-year term for selling a fatal dose of heroin to Chase Goudet, 26, in 2016. A long history of drug-related convictions earned him a sentence enhancement as an habitual offender.

The state Department of Corrections didn’t say how guards failed to catch Scott sooner, but took the opportunity to warn that “[t]here is no legitimate reason for an incarcerated individual to request that their family and friends place money on an app for purchases made while they are incarcerated.” Rather, the agency said, such transactions should be made via JPay, the third party privately contracted to handle them—for a fee, of course.
