The number of incidents increased by 804 from 13,686 in 2005 to 14,490 in 2006. The largest increase was with assault and battery without weapon incidents. Physical assaults without weapon on an inmate seemed to present the largest increase for incidents. According to Division of Adult Institutions, the largest increase in incidents from 6,868 in 1996 to 9,784 in 1997 was due to new reporting requirements that began in 1997. In 2006, the increase in the number of incidents could possibly be related to the increase in the institutions and camps population. 16000 14000 12000 T o 10000 t 8000 a 6000 l 4000 2000 0 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Total Incidents Source: Table 1 RATE OF INCIDENTS The rate of incidents per 100 average daily institution population increased from 8.7 in 2005 to 9.2 in 2006.
