JURISDICTIONS CERTIFIED • • Tennessee - Pursuant to our recommendation, the Tennessee Department of Corrections was granted full certification on May 26, 1993 • JURISDICTIOIIS WITH APPLICATIONS UNDBR REVIEW Forsyth County, (North Carolina) - Our formal review was completed on July 19, 1993 and it was determined that this jurisdiction meets all m~n~mum requirements for grievance procedures in effect for less than one year. We have recommended conditional certification be granted. Swan River Forest Camp, (Montana) - Our formal review was completed on July 20, 1993 and it was our recommendation that this jurisdiction be granted conditional certification. • • X I ~ ~~, ,(7 eJO" I Thru: Mike Pear lfnan' and Carolyn sal? 1 I Michigan - A formal review of the Michigan Department of Corrections Prisoner\Parolee Grievance Procedure was completed on May 18, 1993 and deficiencies were identified. Michigan advises us that they are currently working to modify areas of concern. or particular note was a personal visit this office received from the Director of the Quaker organization, American Friends Service COmmittee. The organization's stated goals are to, improve the Michigan grievance procedure. Their concerns were communicated to Michigan, 'and we have been informed that a productive dialogue has developed between the two parties • New Mexico - On June 25, 1993, we received New Mexico's grievance procedure modifications and evidence of past performance. We are currently reviewing this documentation which is required by • • -2- §40.11 for full certification. vermont There have been several discussions with vermont Department of Corrections concerning additional information which we will need to complete a formal review of their March 29, 1993 application. We have been advised'that the requested information will be forthcoming. Kansas - This jurisdiction currently maintains only a one year conditional certification and has applied for full certification. Additional information has been requested in order that full certification can be considered. Rhode Island - In January, 1993 we advised this jurisdiction that their application did not meet the minimum standards for certification. They have asked that their application remain open. INFORMAL INQUIRIES Kentucky - On JI.ine 17, 1993, we mailed an Information Handbook and a listing of certified jurisdictions to the Office of General Counsel for the Kentucky Department of Corrections. • • Arlington, (Vi cginia) - On June 21, 1993, we mailed an Information Handboo~ to the Arlington county Sheriff's Department pursuant to their rE!quest. correspondences We continue to receive numerous letters frem several jurisdictions. A log is maintained to track these letters. The majority of the correspondence is generated by inmates. strategies We are currently reviewing the Inmate Handbook for updatinq. We are also considering suggestions, received from applicants, regarding layout changes to clarify instructions for jurisdictions seeking certification. ~ Attachment • cc: Kathleen M.
