City of Golden 911 10th Street, Golden, CO 80401 Telephone 303-384-8045, Facsimile 303-384-8036 POLICE DEPARTMENT For Immediate Release: August 25, 2003 Contact: Julie Brooks Public Information Officer 911 10th St. Golden, CO 80401 303-384-8051 303-206-4222 (pager) jbrooks@ci.golden.co.us Golden Police to Carry TASERs GOLDEN, Colo. – Citizens and visitors of Golden may see a new device on the duty belts of local police. The large yellow devices are a new, less-lethal tool in the Golden Police Department’s commitment to protect the citizens of Golden. On Monday, August 25, 2003, officers trained in its use will begin carrying the M26 TASER. The police department currently has ten TASERs; enough to have several available every shift. Although officers will always rely on lethal force if that becomes necessary, each less-lethal tool added to the technology already in use by the police department makes the risk of having to use lethal force that much lower. The Golden Police Department has deployed other forms of less-lethal force in the past. This type of force can be especially helpful when dealing with suicidal people. The M26 is designed to transmit electrical impulses that temporarily disrupt the body’s central nervous system, causing electro–muscular disruption. All officers with the Golden Police Department will be trained to use the M26 TASER by the middle of September. ###
